Pre-Employment Drug Testing for Employers in Alaska

As part of the hiring process, pre-employment drug testing for potential candidates or new hires is a preventive measure to set the tone for a drug-free workplace.

While cities such as Anchorage, Fairbanks, and Wasilla in Alaska do not mandate workplace drug testing, pre-employment drug testing is permitted. Employers are generally allowed to set their own policies regarding drug use and whether to drug test employees for any job-related purpose, consistent with business necessity and the employer’s policy. In addition, on the federal level, drug testing is most often required and many federal agencies operate out of the great state of Alaska.

What are the guidelines for employers?

In Alaska, drug-free workplace policies are evolving and can vary from state to state. Establishing standards helps protect companies from frivolous lawsuits based on discrimination accusations related to drug testing. Here are some general best practice guidelines:

  • Inform applicants in advance that pre-employment drug testing is part of the screening process.
  • Ensure all applicants for the same job undergo the same type of drug test.
  • Administer drug tests at a state-certified laboratory.

What are the drug testing specimen types?

  • Urine drug testing is the most common method among employers and is mandated for regulated tests like those by the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT). It has a shorter detection window, and results are available within a few days.
  • Saliva drug testing is a less-invasive test with a detection period of 2-48 hours. It can be performed anywhere, and instant test results are available on the spot. Saliva testing is not yet approved for DOT testing.
  • Hair follicle drug testing is the least invasive method, detecting drug or alcohol use for up to 90 days.
