What Are Gas Station Drugs and What Employers Should Know

You may hear the term “gas station drugs” and wonder what it means. It is not a medical term, but it is used to describe products sold in convenience stores or smoke shops that can affect how someone thinks or feels. They are often labeled as supplements or energy boosters, which makes them seem safe, but some of them can act more like drugs.

What they are

Gas station drugs are over-the-counter products that can have strong effects on the body. Two common examples are tianeptine, which is sold under names like Tianaa or Zaza and is not approved in the U.S. and has been linked to addiction and overdose, and kratom, a plant-based product that can act like a stimulant in small amounts and more like an opioid in higher amounts. Both are not approved by the FDA and carry real risks.

Why this matters at work

The concern is not just legality; it is impairment. Some of these products can slow reaction time, affect focus and judgment, and may not show up on standard drug tests. The CDC has reported increasing cases of harm linked to substances like tianeptine, including serious side effects and emergency visits.

The gap employers should know

Many workplace drug testing programs primarily target common substances, leaving newer products like these unaddressed. This scenario means someone could be impaired at work and still pass a drug test, which creates a safety risk and a policy gap for employers.

What to focus on

Employers should keep it simple by reviewing policies to focus on fitness for duty, training supervisors to recognize signs of impairment, and staying updated as guidance from the FDA and CDC continues to evolve.

Keep in mind

Gas station drugs are easy to buy but not always safe. Even if they are legal, they can still affect performance and safety on the job, so the focus should always be on making sure employees are fit to work safely.
