Alaska’s proposed 2027–2030 transportation plan could bring new opportunities for construction companies and trucking businesses. Planned road, bridge, and transportation improvements may affect future hiring, staffing, and workforce testing needs.
In September 2026, the Alaska Department of Transportation & Public Facilities (DOT&PF) released its draft Statewide Transportation Improvement Program (STIP). While the plan is not yet approved, employers can begin reviewing potential projects and preparing for workforce demands.
What Is Included in Alaska’s Transportation Plan?
The draft plan identifies proposed federally funded investments in highways, bridges, transportation safety, ferry infrastructure, and community access. These projects could involve construction crews, equipment operators, and commercial drivers.
The public comment period ended October 29, 2026. DOT&PF will review feedback before submitting the plan for federal approval. Proposed projects do not guarantee construction contracts, start dates, or additional hiring. Employers can review Alaska DOT&PF’s STIP information for updates.
What Should Construction and Trucking Employers Prepare For?
If projects move forward, employers may need additional workers or have to coordinate staffing across multiple jobsites. Before hiring, businesses should review which medical qualifications and testing requirements apply to each position.
Key considerations include:
- DOT physicals: Commercial drivers subject to federal medical certification requirements must maintain valid medical certification.
- Pre-employment drug testing: Drivers covered by FMCSA testing rules generally need a verified negative DOT drug test before performing safety-sensitive duties, unless a regulatory exception applies.
- Respirator requirements: OSHA requires medical evaluations for employees required to use respirators and fit testing for required tight-fitting respirators.
These are existing compliance requirements, not new rules introduced by Alaska’s transportation plan.
How Can Alaska Employers Prepare?
Employers can start by monitoring proposed projects, reviewing staffing needs, and checking DOT medical certification expiration dates. Identifying positions that require pre-employment testing or other occupational health services can also help prevent delays when hiring increases.
