Physical Abilities Testing in Alaska: When Should Employers Use a PAT?

A candidate may have the right experience, but if the job involves lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, or other physical work, employers may also need to know whether that person can perform the physical demands of the position.

A Physical Abilities Test (PAT) evaluates a person’s ability to perform physical tasks related to the job. The goal is not to determine whether someone is generally “fit.” It is to evaluate abilities that actually matter for the work.

What Does a Physical Abilities Test Evaluate?

A PAT should be based on the physical demands of the position. Depending on the job, that may include lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, bending, reaching, or other required movements.

The details matter. How much weight does the employee need to lift? How often? Do they need to carry it afterward? Employers should understand the physical requirements of the job before determining what should be evaluated.

Is a PAT the Same as a Pre-Employment Physical?

No. A Physical Abilities Test evaluates a person’s ability to perform physical tasks associated with the job. A pre-employment physical generally involves medical evaluation of health or medical factors.

The distinction matters under the ADA. EEOC guidance states that physical agility and fitness tests measuring a person’s performance of physical tasks are generally not medical examinations. If testing measures physiological responses such as blood pressure or heart rate, however, it can become a medical examination.

When Should Employers Consider a PAT?

Start with the job. If physical tasks are an essential part of the position, employers should identify those demands and determine whether Physical Abilities Testing is appropriate.

For employers managing hiring and occupational health services in Alaska, this can also help clarify whether the position calls for a PAT, a pre-employment physical, or another occupational health evaluation.
