For Alaska employers and commercial drivers, understanding when a DOT physical is required can help prevent expired medical certificates, CDL issues, and unnecessary delays.
Not every CDL or Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP) holder is required to maintain a DOT medical certificate. The requirement depends largely on the type of commercial operation the driver performs and how the driver has self-certified with the Alaska DMV.
Who Needs a DOT Medical Certificate?
Alaska CDL and CLP holders must identify whether they operate in an excepted or non-excepted category and whether their driving is interstate or intrastate.
Drivers operating in non-excepted commerce generally must maintain a valid Medical Examiner’s Certificate (MCSA-5876). Certain excepted operations may not require a medical certificate, although drivers may still be subject to applicable medical qualification standards.
Alaska also has some state-specific requirements. For example, drivers with an Alaska school bus endorsement are required to maintain a DOT medical certificate.
For employers, the important step is knowing how each CDL driver is classified rather than assuming the same requirement applies to every commercial driver.
Who Can Perform a DOT Physical?
When a DOT physical is required, the examination must be performed by a qualified medical examiner who is certified and listed on the FMCSA National Registry of Certified Medical Examiners.
The medical examiner evaluates whether the driver meets the applicable physical qualification standards for operating a commercial motor vehicle.
If qualified, the driver may receive a Medical Examiner’s Certificate valid for up to 24 months. A shorter certification period may be issued when the medical examiner determines that more frequent monitoring is appropriate.
What Should Alaska Employers Do?
Employers managing CDL drivers should:
- Know which employees are required to maintain medical certification.
- Track medical certificate expiration dates.
- Encourage drivers to schedule their DOT physical before their current certificate expires.
- Review Alaska DMV and FMCSA requirements when a driver’s operating category is unclear.
Staying ahead of expiration dates can help reduce last-minute scheduling problems and interruptions in a driver’s ability to operate a commercial vehicle.
