If an employee is required to wear a tight-fitting respirator, handing them one and sending them to work is not enough.
Employers need to make sure the employee is medically able to wear the respirator and that the specific respirator fits properly.
Medical Evaluation Comes First
OSHA requires a medical evaluation before an employee is fit tested or required to use a respirator at work.
Medical evaluation and fit testing are not the same thing. The medical evaluation determines whether the employee can safely wear a respirator. Fit testing determines whether the specific respirator properly fits the employee’s face.
When Is Fit Testing Required?
For employees using tight-fitting respirators, fit testing is required before initial use and at least annually afterward.
Employees must be tested with the same make, model, style, and size of respirator they will use at work. Another fit test is also required when a different respirator facepiece is used or when physical changes could affect the fit.
Facial hair that interferes with the respirator’s sealing surface can also prevent a proper seal.
Before Sending an Employee for Fit Testing
Before scheduling respirator fit testing in Alaska, employers should confirm:
- The required medical evaluation has been completed.
- The correct respirator make, model, style, and size is available.
- The employee’s fit testing is current.
- Facial hair or other conditions will not interfere with the seal.
Taking care of these details before the appointment can help prevent delays when the employee is ready to start respirator-required work.
Make Respirator Compliance Easier to Manage
Respirator requirements are easier to handle before they become a jobsite problem. A missing medical evaluation, outdated fit test, or incorrect respirator can delay an employee who is otherwise ready to work.
MedPhysicals Plus provides respirator medical evaluations, quantitative respirator fit testing, and other occupational health services in Alaska to help employers prepare workers for respirator-required jobs.
