Every March, during the first week, the construction industry takes time to recognize and celebrate all the women who play such a vital role in building our communities. Women in Construction Week highlights all the accomplishments of women in the field and encourages more women to explore careers in construction. Did you know 14% of the construction workforce are female in cities like Anchorage and Fairbanks?
This celebration began in 1953 when the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) was founded. Their goal has always been to support women working in all areas. This week is about more than just recognition – it’s an opportunity to inspire and promote more women to join the workforce in what has traditionally been a male-dominated industry.
Women are an untapped workforce resource in Alaska’s skilled trades, where labor shortages are growing and more training opportunities are helping women enter careers like electrical, construction, and utility work. Expanding women in trades programs in Alaska can strengthen the state’s workforce, support economic growth, and help fill critical skilled-labor gaps in industries such as energy and infrastructure. Did you know too that there are free skills training program women can take part in such as here?
Even though the number of women in construction is on the rise, they still make up only about 11% of the workforce in the U.S. This is why Women in Construction Week is so important. It allows us to give a spotlight on the women who are already making a difference and motivates younger generations to get involved. These women aren’t just laborers, they’re project managers, architects, engineers, safety experts, and business owners, contributing their unique perspectives and expertise to every project. The safety of women in construction requires special expertise that MedPhysicals Plus as a women-owned business can support. For example the size of masks varies and there are also certain tools optimized for the weight and height of men. MedPhysicals Plus can discuss this with your safety manager for the women on your Alaska teams.
Throughout the week, various events take place. These activities give women in construction a chance to connect with others, share experiences, and learn from each other. Mentorship programs are also a big part of the week, giving women the tools they need to grow their careers.
Celebrating Women in Construction Week is a step toward creating a more inclusive industry. It’s about breaking barriers and showing that construction is a career path for everyone, regardless of gender. With more women entering the field, we’re not just improving gender diversity but we’re also improving the industry’s overall performance by bringing in different viewpoints and ideas.
By acknowledging the contributions of women in construction, we’re helping to build a stronger, more skilled workforce. Women in Construction Week isn’t just about celebrating what’s been achieved; it’s also about encouraging future leaders to follow in their footsteps.
As a women-led company, MedPhysicals Plus supports Women in Construction Week, highlighting the value of diversity and inclusion in all industries, including construction.
