Recognizing Women Who Help Keep Workers Safe
Every March, the United States celebrates Women’s History Month, a time to recognize the contributions women have made across many professions. One field that deserves more attention is workplace safety and occupational health. In Alaska, women are part of the teams that help protect workers, improve safety practices, and support healthier workplaces.
The Growing Presence of Women in Safety and Health Roles
Women continue to make up an important part of Alaska’s workforce. According to the According U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, around sixty percent of women in Alaska participate in the labor force. Many of these workers contribute to industries connected to workplace health and safety.
Women now serve in many roles that support safer work environments, including occupational health services, compliance monitoring, medical examinations for workers, and safety training programs.
Workplace Health Is Part of Workplace Safety
Safety does not only mean preventing accidents. It also includes identifying long term health risks that workers may face on the job.
NIOSH highlights several common workplace hazards. These include repetitive motion injuries, hearing damage from high noise levels, chemical exposure in certain industries, and poorly fitted protective equipment.
