National High Blood Pressure Awareness Month

May is National High Blood Pressure Awareness Month! Having high blood pressure raises the risk for heart disease and stroke, which is a leading cause of death in the United States. Fortunately, high blood pressure is treatable and preventable – here are some ways you can lower your risk:

High Blood Pressure is also known as the “Silent Killer” and usually doesn’t have any symptoms – which is why it is important to get your blood pressure checked at least once a year because even if you feel normal, your health may be at risk.

Eat a heart-healthy diet and cut out excess sodium! Eat plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean or extra lean meats. If you drink alcohol, drink in moderation. By limiting your alcohol intake to one to two drinks per day for men and one drink per day for women you can lessen your risk of developing high blood pressure.

Workout! Cardiovascular or aerobic exercise can help lower your blood pressure and make your heart stronger.

Benefits of Strength Training

Strength training is a key component of overall health and fitness for everyone. The fact is strength training is equally important to aerobics (activities like brisk walking, swimming, running, or cycling). Studies attest that strength training, as well as aerobic exercise, can help you manage and aid in the prevention of conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, and osteoporosis. It can also protect your vitality and make everyday tasks more manageable.

Before starting an exercise routine, consult with your doctor and get a physical medical examination to determine your health baseline. An early checkup can detect any health problems or conditions that could put you at risk of an injury during exercise.
